State Legislators Seek Federal Climate and Clean Energy Jobs Bill
January 26, 2010 by Suzanne Bopp · 1 Comment
Following on the heels of a letter from the business leaders of We Can Lead asking for federal clean energy legislation, now a letter from 1,198 state legislators to President Obama and Congress is
asking for the same thing.
The letter, signed by a bipartisan group of state lawmakers, calls for strong legislation that will create jobs and protect national security, saying that “states have proven that clean energy jobs and climate legislation results in job growth, in greater security, and in spurring American leadership and innovation,” but now is the time for national action.
The group responsible for the letter, the Coalition of Legislators for Energy Action Now (CLEAN), is a bipartisan coalition of state lawmakers created in October 2009 to work for climate action on a national level. The letter’s signatories include 76 majority and minority leaders.
The letter closes by saying, “The clean energy and climate challenge is America’s new space race. The United States has never backed down from a challenge on this scale, and we urge you to again place our country at the forefront of innovation and prosperity.”
