The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to ‘fast-track’ 31 of the most promising renewable energy projects on public lands, completing full environmental analysis and public review by the end of this year. That’s the deadline for securing funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

These proposals – including 14 solar, seven wind and three geothermal installations – are as small as 24 MW and as large as 986 MW, large enough to supply power to 900,000 homes. The projects are located in California, Idaho and Nevada.

The BLM has received about 470 renewable energy project applications, including 158 solar applications, which would affect 1.8 million acres of land. If those projects were built, they could generate 97,000 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 29 million homes.

The BLM expects 10,000 MW of various kinds of renewable power (not including hydropower) to be located on public land by 2015.
