Seminole Electric Cooperative, the third largest power generator in Florida, will not go through with a 750 MW coal-fired power plant it planned to build 50 miles south of Jacksonville. Two 650-MW coal-fired generating units are already on the site.

Long-term regulations and prices for pollution emissions were the reasons given.

That news caps off a year in which there were no ground-breakings for new coal-fired electricity generation facilities in the United States. Since the beginning of the coal rush in 2001 when there were more than 150 proposed coal plants announced, 111 proposed new coal plants have been defeated or abandoned, keeping over 450 million tons of carbon dioxide out of the air each year, according to a release from the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign.

Yesterday about 300 environmental activists gathered outside the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection headquarters, calling for an end to blasting on Coal River Mountain.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed the rally, which was organized by Coal River Mountain Watch, and said that mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia is a crime, and that if the American people could see it, there would be a revolution.

Kennedy is scheduled to return to the state on January 21 to debate Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship at the University of Charleston.
