    • ]]>     A 90,000-ton pile of coal is polluting Seward, Alaska according to a suit brought by two environmental groups. The coal images is intended to be loaded onto ships for export to South America and Asia.

    The lawsuit alleges that Alaska Railroad and Aurora Energy Services are violating the federal Clean Water Act by allowing coal and coal dust to pollute the water off Seward. The suit, brought by Alaska Community Action on Toxics and Sierra Club, seeks civil penalties and asks the court to force the companies to stop polluting or get a permit.

    Area residents in the Alaska region, like residents in dozens of other communities around the country where coal piles are polluting water and contaminating neighborhoods, have complained about the issue for years.
